House Votes to Protect Pledge of Allegiance's "under God"

The House of Representative has passed a bill which would bar the Supreme Court from striking the words "under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance. Largely supported by Republicans in the 247-173 vote, the bill is expected to die without a vote in the Senate, when Congress adjourns this fall. The bill was spurred by the failed court challenge against the constitutionality of the Pledge by a California atheist earlier this year. The words "under God" were added to the Pledge in 1954.
