3. To add to the tips...
There's a Home & Garden TV program called Designer's Challenge that looks very helpful. They take a room designed by an upscale designer and recreate that room using items that cost a lot less. But they still create the ambiance of the original room. I'd like to get some new bedroom furniture this year and plan on using this concept. If I like a bedroom that's decorated beyond my buget, I'm going to find things that are a good fit using newly purchased pieces and my own stuff from around the house.

One more thing - Cut out pictures from magazines and start a folder for yourself. After a while, you'll see a theme emerging and know what sort of decor you like. You can cut out pictures of flowers, clothing, rooms, museum images, architecture. Just anything that strikes you as pleasing. Your style will emerge and make a lot of sense. But heaven help you if your an eclectic like me!
