3. Actually...
I come from a small city with sucky athletics (my high school hadn't had a winning season in football in about 10 years when I left); the football team still made enough to finance every athletic team in the school (granted most other athletic teams don't require much money). It really isn't all that hard to believe when you think about it. The coaches are mostly teachers at the school making a little extra money on the side, not huge wages by any stretch of the imagination (unless your one of the aforementioned Texas schools). Pads for most teams get updated about as often as books (which is to say not often at all), same with training equipment (which mostly comes from the "booster" budget, and if your really smart like some nearby schools you can even get a YMCA added on to the school which means its free), most things that need to be bought yearly (shoes for example) are the responsibility of the athlete involved, stadium maintence amounts to resodding the field once a year (as well as maybe using sprinklers from time to time), where are the huge costs involved? And as for the resources... $3-5 a game (if your lucky) times a few 100 observers min. (mostly parents and students, sometimes at our games there would be well over 1000, maybe 1500) times 5 home games a year plus booster support. 4 x $600 x 5 = $12,000 on its own, not even taking into account booster support and other athletic teams (which basketball at my school frequently would probably bring in quite a bit more money). Its not impossible to understand how that can happen.
