Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) has been one of the biggest whiners about the BCS in Congress.

Don't get me wrong - I think the BCS sucks and would love to see a playoff. However, a) I don't think Congress needs to be worrying about whether or not college football has a playoff system and b) if they did get involved, they would probably screw things up worse than they are now.

Today, Orrin relesased a press release about the BCS along with a pretty little chart. From the press release: "Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) called attention today to concrete data that shows college football revenues and conferences' on-field performance, saying it was further proof that the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) was unfair."

Concrete data? I think not Orrin. First, you combined the Mountain West and the WAC in comparing them to the ACC and the Big East. If you compare those conferences separately against the ACC and Big East, I doubt the numbers would be as favourable. Second, you also chose two lower performing conferences which have not been dominant in college football for the past few years (definitely not the Big East which lost their most powerful football programs to the ACC). You didn't compare the Mountain West and the WAC to the Big10, the Big12, the Pac10 or the SEC. Why? I think we all know why, because the attendance, ranking and ratings numbers wouldn't look as good. That's juking the stats.

I wonder if Orrin will complain as much if/when the Big12 collapses, the Mountain West pulls in Boise and a couple of Big12 teams and gets an automatic bid? I suspect not given that BYU and Utah will then have a chance to get the same revenues that teams in the ACC and the Big East are getting.
