The biggest problem with voting machines is......

the ability to "leagally" disenfranchise large numbers of voters by misallocating machines or simply putting out crappy hardware that you know will fail causing long lines so people will just say screw it.

Paper ballots are the only way to vote. There is no valid excuse in my mind for not having enough paper ballots and my guess is the voting time required for paper ballots is 1/4 less than DRE so the required number of voting booths would be lower or the same number of booths could process larger numbers of voters.
