Partly it was Blair messing things up.

Partly what Americans call an 'anti-incumbency mood' in bad economic times.

And partly that RW parties never seem to quite go away!

There is an even more extreme example in Canada. In 1993, their Conservatives were swept out of office in an utterly humiliating defeat: all but TWO of the sitting MPs lost their seats! But eventually they returned, and no one seems able to dislodge Harper yet.

But at least the Republicans are out for a while; and I'm still hoping that the Tories will have done something to make themselves unpopular by the time we have our next elections.
