There are plenty of people who genuinely wouldn't vote for a black man. And there are people I know who won't vote for Obama in the primary because they think being black makes him unelectable. They will vote for him in the general if he gets the nomination, but they are afraid he can't win because he's black. And I think they felt that way long before the clinton camp starting hinting it. Honestly, I think many of the white people who are admitting in the exit poll that race was a factor aren't even the racists. I think the ones who are admitting it are the ones who worry about electability.
