5. I think he just fancies himself in the role of Kingmaker.
IMO, he wants to be able to dictate candidates and stands on issues to the Democratic Party. His theory seems to be that if he makes us lose enough elections, we'll have to give him everything he wants. He seems not to realize that if we gave him everything he wants, we'd lose even more elections.

BTW, I arrived at this impression by reading what his supporters have to say on DU. I think it fits, certainly better than the portfolio thing. Let's be fair, the man does have an impressive life record of service to progressive causes.
