These people are not Democrats. They desire nothing more than the destruction of the Democratic Party; even opposition to the worst reactionary elements grouped under the standard of the Republican Party takes a secondary place to this over-riding goal. They wish to see a victory by the Republicans, for they imagine this will leave them in charge on the left, and that the people will turn to them for succor against reactionary depredations. No such thing will happen, of course; such cranks are doomed to a life of isolation and impotence, but it is characteristic of the perverse state of mind they cultivate to be unable to acknowldege this. Meanwhile they will keep up their busy little labor of collaborating with the Republicans, echoing their attack lines against Democrats, blaming Democrats for what Republicans do, and coming no closer to actual denunciation of the Republicans than to say Democrats are just like them. The fact is, they treasure the Republican Party as the thing they hope will destroy the Democratic Party for them, and will waste none of their effort on criticism of the Republicans.
