For Valley Dems, it's Kerry

HE CLEARLY OUTSHINES EDWARDS ON TRADE AND EXPERIENCE

Mercury News Editorial

Democrats going to the polls Tuesday looking for a viable contender face a choice between two articulate and inspiring candidates for the party's presidential nomination, Sens. John Edwards and John Kerry. They hold similar positions on policy issues but voters will find clear distinctions in their records, experience and personalities.

Of the two, Kerry is the far better choice.

Both senators have been right to challenge President Bush's single-minded focus on tax cuts as the principal tool of economic policymaking. Bush's steering of the economy has left America facing massive deficits and a net loss of jobs -- the first for any administration since the Great Depression.

Both candidates have addressed the jobs issue by appealing to workers' fears of trade. That's understandable. Many workers have seen their jobs shipped overseas -- and many of those jobs will never return. It's no surprise then that the issue resonates with voters and that politicians are exploiting it.
