McCain is inconsistent and kind of a basket case, but he doesn't have nearly as many negatives in an election as the other GOP candidates do.

Giuliani = Crossdressing Italian from New York
Romney = Mormon robot
Huckabee = Fundy with a weird name

I think the fundy thing is actually a negative for a GOP presidential candidate. The GOP exploits Christian fundies to win elections, but they have no intention of actually letting them near the levers of power. Bans on porn and abortion are kind of bad for business. John Ashcroft's AG appointment was the highest position they would give to a serious fundy. With that in mind, McCain seems like the top GOP choice, maybe with Huck as a figurehead VP. A ticket like that wouldn't alienate any of the major GOP voter groups like Romney or the Ghoul would.
