In fact it used to be the norm rather than the exception that candidates had spent some time in the military. Especially in the post WW-II era

Eisenhower-Nixon
Kennedy-LBJ
Ford-Dole
Nixon-Agnew
Carter-Mondale
Reagan-Bush (Reagan's service was stateside and more of a ceremonial type thing I think)

Those are just off the top of my head.
