49. Security a big thing?
Go tell that to the primary voters so far. Most of them are more concerned about jobs and healthcare than they are with any "security threat" and color-coded "terror alerts" conjured up by Shrub and Co.

And as far as "scaring off the moderates", I think you're mistaken. Take a look at this article (PDF file) and see if you don't agree with its points.

Why should we, as Democrats, be so damned scared of losing the votes of a couple million finicky, indecisive "moderates" when we have 50% of the voting age population who DO NOT VOTE? If we even put forth 1/10th the effort we make toward swaying "moderates" toward getting left-leaning non-voters to the polls, we'd win in a second.

Look what courting "moderates" has done for this party in the last twelve years: we lost the US House, US Senate, majority of governorships, and only won the Presidency in '92 and '96 because of Ross Perot. We won '00, but because the vote was so close we lost it on a technicality.

Courting the so-called "moderate" vote only weakens our party and our power. Staying true to our Democratic roots and "on message" will strengthen not only our party, but our positions in government, too.
