For 20 minutes, the senator from North Carolina had the crowd hanging on every word.

"The truth is we live in a country where there are still two different Americas," ... This unifying theme carries Edwards through several issues including jobs, trade policy, taxes, health care, race and foreign affairs, all with jabs at President Bush.

...

UW-La Crosse political science professor Joe Heim said he thought the crowd was largely undecided before Edwards took the stage. "By the end, I thought they were pretty enthused about the guy. His stump speech is very impressive, one of the best I've ever heard," Heim said.

Betty Hammond of Stoddard, Wis., said ... Edwards remains her second-favorite of the Democrats, behind John Kerry. ... "{although she loved Edwards concern for the poor} I'm still leaning toward Kerry because he's getting more votes."

....

In a speech earlier Wednesday in Janesville, Edwards talked about creating a "high-road economy....most companies take the low road. That means they cut your wages and benefits as far as they can in order to push up their profits, and when they can't cut anymore, they pick up your job and take it to another country where they can pay just pennies an hour. Our trade policies encourage it, and our tax policies reward it..When I am president, we will cut off the low road for these companies and create a high-road economy where companies have the tools and incentives to stay in America and create good jobs for our workers."
