I think Secretary of State might actually be better for him--at least for now--and perhaps almost as good for the country.

If we do manage to elect a Dem president this year, whoever it is is going to have a very rough row to hoe. So let John Kerry or John Edwards or even Howard Dean beat his brains out trying to deal with a Republican congress. Let them endure the interminable investigations and boundless bile the wingnuts will unleash on them, just as they did with Clinton.

And Wes, with his four languages and his enormous prestige in Europe, let him go back and re-establish the relationships he built as SACEUR. Let him restore this country's honor and prestige with our allies abroad. Those 55 ambassadors and diplomats who endorsed him know he'll make their jobs easier and themselves much safer whether he's president or SecState, and he'll do the same for those of us here at home.

The man makes me feel safe. He seems to have the effect on a lot of people. We need him to remain in public life in some capacity.
