Ickes rumored for top DNC job
BY CRAIG GORDON
WASHINGTON BUREAU
November 6, 2004

Democratic Party insiders say Harold Ickes, a former Long Island lawyer with close ties to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, is being mentioned as a possible successor to the national party's outgoing chairman.

At least one Democratic source sought to tamp down speculation about Ickes, saying his ties to former President Clinton may not make him the best standard-bearer for the party. Ickes also was embroiled in the campaign-finance scandal surrounding the Clinton White House, though he was never accused of any illegality. Also, an Ickes move into the party's top job might be viewed as setting the stage for a Hillary Clinton presidential bid in 2008. Clinton is popular within her party, but some fret she would have trouble appealing to moderate voters.
