HARTFORD, Conn. -- A poll released Tuesday found nearly two-thirds of residents surveyed believe Gov. John G. Rowland should resign, but the governor reiterated he's done nothing wrong and has no plans to step aside.

"I don't think anybody would ever resign for something that they didn't do," Rowland said.

There have been numerous calls for Rowland's resignation since December, when the three-term Republican admitted taking gifts from state contractors and employees and lying about it.

The latest University of Connecticut poll found 65 percent of people surveyed said Rowland should step aside while 28 percent said he should remain in office. Fifty-seven percent of respondents said Rowland should be impeached if he refuses to resign.
