Assuming that they actually had them and it was just Hollywood kitsch that prevented them from showing us...

what did they do with all the shit? Did they store it up and dispose of it when they docked at a space station? Did they collect it until they had enough to leave a small asteroid of faeces floating in space? Worse, did they recycle it?
