Picture a vibrant, progressive city (overwhelmingly liberal and Democratic) near spectacular mountains, beaches, and forests with a mild climate and some of the friendliest people in the country.

Here are a few accolades that Portland received in recent years:

- Best Place to Live in the USA for 2001 (Money Magazine)
- Best City for Bicycling in the USA (Bicycling Maagazine)
- Most Kid-Friendly City in the USA
- Most Enlightened Town (Utne Reader)
- Number One in Resident Satisfaction
- One of the Greatest Places to Live (Outside Magazine)
