Now I have to chime in.

I had a vasectomy 2 weeks ago. We've already had two kids, and don't want any more.

Despite my joking about it, it was a minor procedure, done with local anaesthetic, and it took about 25 minutes.

The worst part was the anaesthetic injection, and that was relatively minor.

Two weeks later, and I'm nearly fully healed.

The doctor said to wait 4 months (and 40 ejaculations) before submitting semen samples for testing; once I'm cleared, we are 'go ahead' for condomless sex.

The procedure was billed as a standard office visit, and so I only payed the $20 co-pay... the cost of several boxes of high-quality condoms.

The realistic alternatives to condoms would be the pill (risky for long term use) or tubal ligation, an invasive (and far riskier, and more expensive) surgical procedure.

In my opinion, any man who forces/allows his wife to undergo the tubal ligation rather than have the vasectomy shows no love or respect to his wife, and does not deserve her.

I can understand your present fear of such a procedure; I probably would have reacted the same myself 20 years ago.

The reason for it will likely become viscerally more clear in about 20 years' time for you, after you're married, and have had a few kids.
