5. Splicing will work

Make sure the polarity is right or you could fry you modem. If you are not up to soldering you can buy small wire nuts at any hardware store. Even if there are just short peices left you can make two splices and use speaker cable to make up the difference.

The Radio Shack universal supply will fit about anything. The only thing bad about them is that if you accidentally ever set to the wrong voltage you can damage the equipment.
