and not "have the tops and bottoms cut off". We've had a lot of great posts from video store workers here on DU about the dumbasses who return movies because of the tops and bottoms being cut off.

My sister's family, except the educated daughter, refuse to watch widescreen movies (because they want the WHOLE picture, dammit!, no matter how many times I explain it to them) or movies with subtitles - not because they can't read, but because they feel that they shouldn't have to "work" while watching a movie - someone should go to the effort to do it in English for them. They're progressive politically, but absolutely not culturally or intellectually. And I'd say they are a pretty fair representation of the majority of Americans. Probably even a bit smarter.

Of course, they also tend not to care for English-language movies that might require paying attention because of complex plot lines or philosophical content because you should be able to hold a conversation during the movie and do other things and not have to "work" because its entertainment.
