Just a nitpick - if the background is a single color, use select > color range. It'll give you a MUCH less ragged selection that the magic wand (I hate the magic wand...), and if there's any selection overlap into the subject, that can quickly be fixed in quickmask mode.

There are also the background eraser and magic eraser tools, which are tricky to learn, but come in handy if you know how to use them.

On edit: OK, I don't remember if those special eraser tools are in 6.0, now that I think about it.
