I work with some people like this. I don't know what they think they're being paid for - simply passing items over a scanner and handing a customer a receipt is not worth the paycheck he's getting, no matter how measly it is (and in some places - like where I work - we're union and make a pretty decent paycheck).

No, he's getting paid to PUT UP WITH people. There's a limit, of course, but for the most part, the money he gets is for being polite and nice to people you might ordinarily want to strangle.

That's retail.
