LIVING to the ripe old age of 120 will soon be routine, a British scientist has claimed.

Cambridge University genetics professor Aubrey de Grey said he expected life expectancy to soar by another 40 years within a generation.

The average life expectancy in Australia is 77 for men and 82 for women.

Dr de Grey said a combination of gene and stem cell therapies, and injections to reprogram immune systems, will stop ageing within 25 years.

"It could mean a 50-year-old person lives another 50 to 70 years rather than 20 to 30 - and they are healthy years. We are not talking about frailty," Dr de Grey said.
