has his schedule been disrupted lately? Anything that might make him feel insecure?

Might want to ask the vet, could be symptomatic of a health issue. OR, do you have someplace warm and snug he could sleep and still feel safe? With water, food, and litter box? We have 7 cats, and they all sleep downstairs in the (heated/finished) basement. One or two might meow for a few minutes when we first "put them to bed" but then they just go konk out. We've done this their entire lives, though, so they're used to it; we have about 2 beds for each cat so they have a choice, litter boxes aplenty, and food and water. It helps that they have each other for company, though.

Good luck!
