... explaining to him what happened, and then why you have always supported the locally-owned store, instead of other national chains (include the usual good arguments).

Then say, simply, that if your money is going to go into the pockets of people who disrespect free speech on the basis of their own political leanings, then it's to your advantage to give them the least amount possible, and that perhaps that means shopping where it's cheaper.
