Just because CIC and Radio Central have good comms doesn't mean that the rest of the crew has any contact with the outside world.
Yes, we had a internet connection... But it only takes one switch to cut us off from the outside world if the Captain/Commodore/Admiral so desires. And they did, off and on, for the following 4 days it took us to get to San Diego. And even with the internet, we had a slow link and spotty coverage. It took me months, literally, to put together what George did in the hours and days after the first attack.
