I heard about it from I think AP online and had happened to have CNN on at the time... to hear some mundane interview they had on...and they kept replaying it trying to decide what kind of plane it was.
First they reported that it was a small private plane. Then they said, no it appeared to be a jetliner, a passenger plane.

A few minutes later while CNN was talking about the first plane, the second one hit. I saw it.
That was here in DC.
So... that is just my experience.
....and then the horror sank in and all the phone lines started to go down.
