Iraq War/Zell Miller protestor in court today

The first member of the group that calls itself the "Atlanta Five" is scheduled to appear in State Court of Fulton County today.

The group takes its name from the "Chicago Seven" protesters who opposed the Vietnam War 35 years ago and whose trial made national headlines.

The "Atlanta Five" are charged with criminal trespass for refusing to leave the Colony Square offices of Sen. Zell Miller on Nov. 4, 2002, where they say they were trying to make an appointment with the senator to talk about their opposition to the Iraq war.

Joe Parko, a 65-year-old retired Georgia State University professor, said he would address a scheduled anti-war rally outside the courtroom before his first appearance at 9 a.m. today.

"If Zell Miller had not abdicated his duty as a senator, I wouldn't have been charged and I wouldn't be in court," Parko said Monday. "Our only demand was he give us an appointment, and, frankly, we were shocked when he refused."
