56. So far no member of this regime seems to have bothered to attend a funeral
I mean, Arlington Cemetary is just so far to travel from the WH, you know? And the coffins are still returning in the dead of night, no photographers allowed. When my generation said we hoped the lessons of Vietnam would never be forgotten, I don't think this (the bodies coming home for all to see) is the one we had in mind.

I don't really care if a person has served in the military or not; to me it's not the only definition of manhood, and a principled resistance takes as much courage. But I care deeply whether or not someone in a position of power heedlessly throws away the lives of others entrusted to them. The young Bill Clinton only did what every boy I knew was hoping to do, and at least he really thought about the implications of his actions.

"Chickenhawk" has come to mean a person who is enthusiastically bellicose, but never jumped at the chance to fight when his/her own opportunity arose. That covers every person in the Bush administration except Colin Powell. Bush, Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Perle, DeLay, Gingrich, Limbaugh -- well, they are all, all honorable men -- but none of them knows firsthand the stink of death, the screams of the newly-maimed, the incoherence of the shattered mind. And they don't care -- not one of them seems to have a clue. Wealth and empire uber alles.

"But why should we hear about body bags and deaths and how many,
what day it's going to happen, and how many this or what do you
suppose? Oh, I mean, it's not relevant. So why should I waste my
beautiful mind on something like that?" ~Barbara Bush

"I guess the 'nation's grandma' isn't the grandma of those her son sends into harm's way." ~Hekate
