Reply #2: It's not clear whether Gibson belongs to Opus Dei [View All]

I just did a quick search on the question, and this is what I came up with:

- Gibson's "traditionalist" brand of Catholicism has a definite association or overlap of membership with Opus Dei.

- The advance showing of "The Passion" to the Pope was arranged by a couple of Opus Dei membmers, and they were the ones who claimed the Pope had endorsed it.

- However, Gibson himself has never said that he belongs to Opus Dei, and there does not appear to be any hard evidence that he does.

Still, I was interested to see that the rumors are out there. It's something to file away for further consideration.
