3. One thing you can say about it: it makes its own sauce.
War always has a way of producing more reasons to justify more of itself. It takes a terrific act of will for a leader to stand up to the seemingly rational invariably persuasive arguments of his Generals and say, "Thank you, gentlemen, but I think we've had enough of your magnificent war plans and your stellar performance in the field, and I'm ending it right here."
