A 69-year-old Palo Alto woman and retired Stanford University lecturer who twice climbed Mount Kilimanjaro is missing and is believed to have perished while hiking on a mountain in Iran this week, a university spokeswoman said Thursday.

Kathleen Namphy, a peace activist who survived long battles with breast cancer and Hodgkin's disease, disappeared Sunday while climbing 18,600-foot- high Mount Damavand.

The body of a female hiker has reportedly been found on the mountain, and Namphy's son, Andre, is on his way to Iran to identify the body, a family spokeswoman said.

She was also a grandmother, an environmentalist, a frequent hiker in the Sierra and a peace activist who traveled to Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Baghdad on behalf of the Christian Peacemakers group.
