Fighting raged Friday around the disputed Libyan town of Ajdabiya, key to control of the east of the country, with rebels still holding out despite advances by government forces.

An AFP correspondent heard explosions from the direction of Zuwaytinah, a small oil port on the coast 30 kilometres (20 miles) north of Ajdabiya on the road to the rebel capital of Benghazi.

Medical and rebel sources in the nearby village of Shatt al-Badin said the port area had come under bombardment from forces loyal to Libyan strongman Moamer Kadhafi.

"There are some 100 Kadhafi troops fighting us at Zuwaytinah and they have been shelling us intermittently since yesterday," a rebel officer commanding some 15 fighters, Yussef al-Shwaidi, told AFP.
