9. We Can't Do It; We'll Be Lucky to Keep Amtrak
Bravo for the Chinese (And the Japanese, and the French, the Spanish, the Germans, etc.) for building high-speed passenger rail lines. Too bad we can't build a high-speed rail line in this country.

Unfortunately, US passenger rail policy has been heavily influenced by anti-"big-gummint" yahoos (Subsidized by oil companies) who see such projects as "socialistic."

This last election bodes to be a severe setback for ANY sort of intercity passenger rail system, high-speed or conventional. Unfortunately, with the "TEA bag" mentality, the US will be lucky to keep Amtrak funded and even partially operating.
