Democrats gain Latino support

Gains made by Republicans among registered Hispanic voters during the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections have eroded in the past two years, with more Hispanics reversing course in support of Democrat Barack Obama for president over Republican John McCain by 66 percent to 23 percent, a recent nationwide survey by the Pew Hispanic Center shows.

"There's a possibility that (New Mexico Gov. Bill) Richardson will be the Democratic vice-presidential candidate, so that's possibly what's drawing Hispanics," said Richard Harisay, chairman of the Marion County Democrats' legislative committee in Salem.

Calls by the Statesman Journal to the Oregon and Marion County Republicans were referred to John McCain's West Regional Campaign Headquarters in Nevada.

Rick Gorka, a McCain campaign spokesman for the western region, said they were perplexed by the report's findings.
