Renewed Congo Fighting Menaces Peace Process -UN

Renewed fighting in eastern Congo is a serious threat to the peace process in the central African nation, the Security Council warned on Monday, condemning the taking of Bukavu by renegade forces.

The fighting is the most serious challenge yet to President Joseph Kabila's struggle to restore central authority across the vast country, Africa's third largest, after five years of war, and has reignited tension with tiny neighbor Rwanda.

Following the fall of Bukavu, Kabila accused Rwanda of backing the soldiers who took the town. Rwanda denied involvement and warned Kabila against targeting the town's ethnic Tutsis.

About 50 international U.N. staffers were pulled out of Congo following the fighting in Bukavu and the anti-U.N. riots, the United Nations said on Monday.
