Americans expect big changes if Dems win Nov. 7
Updated 10/26/2006 9:37 AM ET

By Susan Page, USA TODAY

WASHINGTON — Most Americans predict Democrats will win control of the House of Representatives in the elections Nov. 7, and they expect big things to follow — some good, some not — if Democrats take over both chambers, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll shows.

POLL RESULTS: What would be different?

If Democrats take over the House and Senate in January, more than 8 in 10 say, Congress would probably set a timetable to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq, a step favored by nearly two-thirds.

Less popular: Nearly two-thirds expect a Democratic Congress would raise federal income taxes. Three-fourths disapprove of that.

The survey of 1,002 adults Friday through Sunday underscores the high expectations and considerable trepidations around the prospect that Democrats could regain control of Congress for the first time since 1994. A 54% majority, including 1 in 4 Republicans, say a takeover of the House is likely.

ON DEADLINE: Do you expect big changes on Capitol Hill?............
