ATLANTA, Sept. 5 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Former U.S. Senator Max Cleland told viewers of "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer" on CNN today that "Veterans will stand their ground this fall during the mid-term elections campaign and will not let the far-right or Republican politicians question their patriotism because they disagree with the White House on the war in Iraq."

Noting that it's been common practice to brand critics of the war as "unpatriotic, or appeasers in the war on terror," Cleland who lost his senate seat from Georgia in the face of such attacks two years ago, added, "We won't be swift-boated this time like we were in 2004."

Cleland was referring to attacks on Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry and himself on the 2004 elections when the Democrats' war records were unjustifiably questioned by a small but well-financed group of veterans.

He also added that similar attempts are now underway to do to U.S. Rep. John P. Murtha, D-PA "what these far-right Republicans did to us in the last election."
