Rove Benefit Stirs Controversy
--------------------
Jul 13, 2005 10:00 am US/Eastern
--------------------
Democrats are challenging Lieutenant Governor Michael Steele to cancel a fundraiser later this month with Karl Rove.

The White House deputy chief of staff is under fire after the surfacing of a new e-mail about his possible role in leaking information two years ago about a CIA officer.

A spokesman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee says it's an opportunity for Steele to show what he's made of, and decide whether Rove reflects his values and Maryland's values.

But a spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee says there's no reason to cancel the event.

Steele has not committed himself to a Senate race next year, but set up an exploratory committee to help him make a decision. He's under pressure from national and state party officials to run for the seat that will come open with the retirement of Democratic Senator Paul Sarbanes.
