The average programmer in the US makes approx. 82k, the average programmer in India makes 13k (with no benefeits). But, due to the exchange rate the Indian programmer is middle to upper middle class. (while 13k wouldn't be enough to survive in the US, it is enough to make you quite comfortable in India) .
