My PS3 crapped out on me
Just the blu-ray player so I can still play my downloaded games but nothing on disk. I probably can't afford to get it repaired and I know I can't afford a new one... Grrrr, piss me off x(

3. Did you check things like a misalignment/dirty lens/etc?

A quick Google shows drives for sale. If your PS3 isn't under warranty anymore- and your complaint here makes me assume it isn't- replacing it yourself may be a route you could try- if you're brave....

edit: here's a guide for the PS3 slim version; I'm sure there's one out there somewhere for the regular version as well:

4. Yeah, I tried that
It is a real old one, long out of warranty. I took it apart a while ago and upgraded the hard drive and that went fine. I found a guide to clean the blu-ray drive and that did not seem to be the problem (or at least cleaning it did not fix the problem). It does spin, so it might be out of alignment but I can't seem to get it to read either games or movies (blu-ray or DVD). It looks like I can get another blu-ray for between $70-90, which is not too bad but it's going to have to wait a bit.

In the mean time, I dug out Titan Quest and loaded that on my laptop. Damn thing started over heating almost right away and I'm thinking... WTF? This game is like 4 or 5 years old and I used to run it just fine on a lesser desk top. So, I did some searching and it seems this happens to a lot of games on laptops... Without reading everything, like I should have, I went to under-clock the CPU to keep it cooler and WTF AGAIN... They lock out adjusting CPU speed on laptops now? What genius came up with that plan? It took me another hour hunting around to find out how to get the freaking game to run. Seems now, all you have to do is click on the battery icon on the task bar and change the power plan... I guess this does not directly under-clock the CPU but pretty much has the same effect. So now I get to switch the power plan back and forth one for Titan Quest and another for movies... Sheesh.
