Who specifically instigated the FCC hearings?
Who are the specific politicians, and do they have ties to the Dominionist church/state?

Anyone DUer's with info on this?

1. It would be more appropriate to ask "what" instigated the hearings
and the answer is election year RW moralizing politics. The GOP is running on its own generally skewed view of morality this year. Personally, I think its a damn risky strategy.

the debates?

Or, the people who do "pop-up videos" on MTV/VH1?

That would be funny.

W onscreen - NASCAR "balloon" has "Enron - $100K", etc.

Honestly, the first time she saw it, my mother-in-law was wondering why they were driving around with hot-air balloons tied to their cars. Then they were explained to her.
