(111,938 posts)but for all practical purposes careers are ruined when they are caught committing felonies (whether or not they are convicted). They lose the opportunity to hold any jobs with fiduciary responsibilities, they lose security clearances, and their lives are generally in so much financial turmoil that employers are going to be reluctant to hire them. The fact that they are "recovering" addicts means that they will always be susceptible to relapse and may even resort to other crimes to finance their addiction.
I've been around addicts and I was forced into rehab myself because I'm considered to be a marijuana addict. It isn't fair that people are shamed for their past actions, but in Mr. Finkelstein's case there not only are the public records of his legal issues but newspaper articles about it too. He decided to advertise his political views on Twitter so he has chosen to also be a target of whatever backlash may develop. I don't have a lot of sympathy for him. If he didn't want his name smeared, then he should have kept his opinions to himself or at least not broadcast them on social media.
