Centre County (home to Penn State's main campus) has 1/10 the population of the city (county) of Philadelphia (where we have so far been able to get our daily cases down to the lowest since March - after tamping down the Temple University spike which forced them to go all-virtual).

The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 1,151 new coronavirus cases Tuesday, raising the statewide total to 146,214. It’s the third time in September the state has reported more than 1,000 new cases in a day. The state didn’t top 1,000 cases in a day in August. The health department reported an increase of 212 cases in Centre County, while Philadelphia is reporting a two-day increase of 197 cases. Centre County is home to Penn State’s main campus.

Across Pennsylvania, 7,875 deaths have been tied to COVID-19, including 6 newly reported fatalities. More than two-thirds of the state’s coronavirus deaths have occurred in long-term care facilities, such as nursing homes.

The health department has said it’s concerned about a growing number of infections among young adults, particularly those 19 to 24 years old. Some colleges and universities, such as Temple University, Bloomsburg University and Gettysburg Colleges, have moved most of their fall courses online due to spikes in coronavirus cases. Gov. Tom Wolf’s administration has said it’s concerned about the number of cases on college campuses.

The state’s percentage of positive COVID-19 tests rose to 4.2% over the past week, up from 4% the previous week. A total of 17 counties are being monitored by the Wolf administration because 5% of those tested are positive for COVID-19. Those counties include Centre (9.2%); York (7.4%); Chester (6.5%); Beaver (5.7%) and Dauphin (5.2%).
