August briefing.

Clark's media binge and how the entire terrorism/AQ issue was sidelined.

"Stovepiping" and compartmentalization of intelligence.

Patriot Act.

A DUer said something similar about some other issue. He had never heard of the problem under *, and there was complete media silence. Took 50 second to reply with a bunch of DU OPs about NYT, WaPo, and other prominent MSM media reports nailing * for the issue year after year. With posts by the DUer in question in the following discussions. He didn't remember the media coverage, the DU postings, or even his own rather outraged postings.

This is a bit worse than the response to 2001, mostly because it's a lesser horror than the one we've been through already. On the other hand, supposedly we're better protected than we were in 2001, esp. since Obama has been billed as so much better than * in every way. If he's better, he's to be held to a higher standard. If he's to be held to the same standard, he's not better (at least in this regard). And if he's to be held to a lower standard, the inference is that we think he's worse (at least in this regard).

There is something in common between the two attacks, though: After each, some group used it as an emotional, gutwrenching appeal for the reduction and restriction of some rights. In 2001 we were reminded of Franklin's "Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." Now we just need to stop the violence and think of the children.

M'eh. Memnosyne would be pissed off.
