(29,322 posts)The big rallies gave him a better chance than the 20 or so candidates. Sanders easily could have won but the media freaked out over Sanders win or like in New Hampshire the narrative was "the big story is Klobuchar came in 3rd". Nevada you had freakouts of epic proportion. After Biden won South Carolina he got millions in free advertising and glowing coverage. If 5 or so candidates stayed in and tried to win Sanders probably would have won until the party figured out a strategy to beat him. Remember before the consolidation Warren was willing to stay in though she had little chance to win to prevent Sanders from getting the required delegates.
Jake Tapper said he had reminders of 2004. Howard Dean had the most fundraising & biggest rallies but Kerry was seen as most likely to beat Bush. He was told by a Bush aide that they actually feared Dean more and Dean said "now you tell me."
All that said I think Biden will beat Trump and I will be happy once he's gone.
