LIke the Faux noise mantra. People don't want to read and understand the news, they want to think they have a sense of what the news is..
As Rodger Ailes said back in the Nixon era:
"Today television news is watched more often than people read newspapers, than people listen to the radio.The reason? People are lazy. With television you just sit—watch—listen. The thinking is done for you."
