In reply to the discussion: The Press Cuts Off Trump As Consensus Grows To Stop Covering His Rallies [View all]Mr. Ected
(9,670 posts)Between regularly-scheduled campaign rallies held long after the campaign, to tweets that seem born of self-revulsion projected on others, to visits to axis of evil countries with autographed 70's albums offered in lieu of diplomacy or brinkmanship, it's no wonder the media is collectively shrugging its shoulders as to how they are supposed to cover the greasiness of it all.
In a way, deciding not to cover him is playing right into his hands, as he will chide the media for cherry picking the news, something he does every moment of his life, but can accuse the press for doing and emerge unscathed with his base. The press will do some introspection and wonder how much they want to BE the news and how much they want to REPORT the news.
But giving rallies and tweets mainstream attention, as if the points made were subject to debate, only fortifies Trump's positions and validates them in a sneaky backdoor way. Good to drop them completely and only report Trump news that was generated in an official capacity. The rest is pure theater, and theater cannot be the basis of non-fictional reporting.
